PFAS In Private Wells

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), commonly referred to as "forever chemicals," are a group of man-made chemicals that are difficult to break down and can build up in the environment or living things. Certain PFAS chemical compounds released into the environment can seep into groundwater and travel significant distances beneath the surface, especially through cracks in bedrock. In Massachusetts, many private wells draw water from these deep bedrock fractures, making them susceptible to contamination.

PFAS can be a health concern if they exceed a nation-wide standard. If you are interested in learning more about PFAS and how to address them, check out the Mass DEP PFAS Information Sheet
