PREPARE NOW: Safety Tips
With single-digit temperatures expected on the near horizon, it is important to keep you and your family warm and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities.
Home Preparedness:
- Keep thermostats set to 60°F or higher
- Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
- Clear the area of exterior vents to your water heater, furnace, and other appliances
- Allow water to drip from faucets to prevent your pipes from freezing
- Know where your water shut-off valve is located
Stay Safe:
- Only go outdoors when necessary
- Dress in layers and do not leave skin exposed
- NEVER use ovens, stoves, or grills to keep your home heated
- Keep space heaters at least 3 feet from anything flammable
- Check on elderly neighbors and those living alone
- Stay off bodies of water, even if they appear to be frozen over
Watch for Warning Signs:
- Frostbite feels like a numbness, with visual indicators such as white/pale skin; typically on fingers, toes, and face.
- Hypothermia can cause confusion, slurred speech, and shivering. Call 911.
Stock Your Home:
- Medications, food, and water should be available for 3-7 days
- Charge all devices prior to the storm, such as flashlights, batteries, and portable chargers
Prepare Vehicles:
- Keep your gas tank at least halfway full
- Ensure proper tire pressure
- Check windshield washer fluid supply
- Keep an emergency kit in your car with items such as blankets, shovels, flashlights, water, and food
If You Need to Leave Your Home:
- Drive with extreme caution. If there are vehicles nearby, drive slow and allow space between both cars.
- DO NOT follow plows, they need space to treat & clear roadways
- Tell someone your plans. Destination and time of arrival. If you use an iPhone, use the Check-In feature.
- Bring cellphones and chargers with you.
- If stranded, stay with your vehicle and call 911
